Bike Box Alan Maintenance – The good news is, your Bike Box Alan needs very little maintenance, just a few minutes care after each use will see you through many years service.
1️⃣ Cleaning the Exterior and internal Shell
After trips:
- Wipe down with warm soapy water or window cleaner.
- Use a soft brush for scuffs and airport grime.
- Avoid harsh solvents (they can dull the plastic).
- If you would like to remove any old stickers make sure the box is at room temperature or you can apply a little heat with a hair dryer
Avoid any of your stickers you would like to keep on the box when cleaning.
2️⃣ Wheels
These take the biggest abuse.
- Check the wheels spin freely.
- Turn the box upside down. You will notice a 1cm diameter rivet head near to the ball race on the swivel wheels.
- Turn the box upside down. You will notice a 1cm ( 1/2 “ diameter) round rivet on the 2 swivel wheels. This is where the sand will be. Spray underneath the rivet while you wobble the wheel from side to side.
- Then wash out the bearings with WD 40
- Wipe all the surplus oil off with a cloth. Then turn the box the correct way up onto a cloth to catch any surplus oil then wipe the wheels again.
- Then turn until you feel the wheel running smoothly.
The wheels are suitable for clean tarmac, concrete roads and airport concourses. If one of your wheels is cracked or is worned down, replace immediately. You can source these on our website.
3️⃣ Clasps
- Check clasps periodically, to see if the tongues (the steel protrusion that locate the two halves) has been bent due to abuse. If so, simply bend back with a broad flat screwdriver.
- Check alignment before every trip.
- Every year spray clasps with WD40 oil or similar to prevent rusting.
Replacement clasps can be purchased on our website
5️⃣ Hinges
- Check hinge rivets are all secured.
- Inspect seam alignment.
- Every year spray hinge with WD40 oil or similar, this will keep it closing smoothly and preventing rust.
6️⃣ Storage Between Uses
Best practice:
- Store indoors in a dry area.
- Avoid direct sunlight (UV fades plastic).
- Keep closed and all clasps fastened to prevent warping.
- Don’t stack heavy items on top long-term.
- Avoid leaving it in cold or damp areas (like sheds)- this can cause rusting of the metal components.
A well-maintained BikeBox Alan can easily last 10+ years of regular travel.
